Causes of zinc particles on the surface of galvanized strip steel

August 18, 2022

In the hot-dip galvanizing plate, the surface will often be distributed with small particles. These small particles not only make the galvanized steel surface rough, affecting the overall appearance, but are also harmful to use.

The main reason for the formation of zinc particles is that the bottom slag is floated by excessive mechanical agitation, causing the zinc liquid to adhere to the surface of the galvanized sheet. Alternatively, the temperature of the zinc liquid may be too high, causing the bottom slag to float. An excessively high aluminum content reduces the solubility of iron in the zinc liquid, thus forming zinc particles.

By reducing the zinc liquid temperature, Cold Rolled Steel Strip quality issues such as zinc particles can be solved. Another solution is to shorten the galvanized sheet stock time to reduce the oxidation of the strip surface, including on Silicon Steel Alloys, significantly minimizing the formation of zinc particles. Additionally, certain products like Cold Rolled Oriented Electrical Steel benefit from these measures to ensure better performance.
